Hello Beauties! Hope you all had a great 4th of July!
I watched fireworks with my family at our community lake this year and as always they never disappoint! It was a great time of celebrating our country’s independence and spending time with family & friends. I also took advantage of the evening events by doing a little experiment! I’ve been wanting to do this for quite some time so I thought I’d share my experience.
The Scenario:
Every year the community I live in has a great fireworks display on the lake and I have to proudly say they are one of the best I’ve seen, they go all out so it’s become a tradition for my family & I to find a spot in a nearby vacant lot to view the show.
As you can imagine being by the lake, in a vacant lot at night is the perfect place to get nasty mosquitoes bites just short of getting eaten alive! So along with watching the fireworks, it’s also been a tradition to break out the Avon Bug Guard! It works great and protects my whole family from getting bit.
This year however, I decided to mix things up a bit. Instead of using my trusted can of Avon Bug Guard I decided to give Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil a try. As an Avon Rep, many of my customers rave about the bath oil and praise it for how great it is for repelling insects. Also over at my “Skin So Soft...Debunking the Myth” page, after reading comment after comment from loyal Skin So Soft users, the testimonies have been so convincing I knew I had to give it a try and the 4th of July holiday seemed like a perfect time to do so. I have to admit though, I was very nervous about using it, those mosquitoes by the lake are fierce and if the bath oil didn't work I would literally be eaten alive! I don’t know if it’s just me but when I get bit, my arms and legs swell up so badly it’s downright painful and the itch is just crazy! So in spite of my fear I mustered up my courage and grabbed the bath oil.
The Experiment:
I wasn’t the only one participating in the experiment, I also got my family involved. To compare the effectiveness of both the Avon Bug Guard and Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil the guys (Hubby, Son & Grandpa) used the Deet-Free Avon Bug Guard Plus Picaradin and the girls (Myself, Mom, Sister & Niece) used the
Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil. After the fireworks we would compare how effective each of the formulas were against mosquito bites. So we slathered and sprayed and headed out to the lake. The guys were confident that we (the girls) were going to come back with welts and bites and truthfully, though I didn’t’ want to admit it to them, so did I. How could just a bath oil that contains no insect repellent whatsoever ward off mosquitoes?
During the show, just as expected those bugs were fierce! The gnats & mosquitoes were relentless! In the back of my mind I thought to myself, “Thank goodness I have the Bug Guard anti-itch spray! When I get home I'm going to spray it all over!.” I was anticipating a ton of bites and being itchy and miserable for the next couple of days.
The Results:
Oh my, oh my! Wait ‘til you read this! The guys did great! As expected the Avon Bug Guard with Picaridin repelled the insects and the guys didn’t have any bites at all, and us girls, well we didn’t’ do so bad either!
Considering how aggressive the mosquitoes were and the amount that were out there, I only had two bites, but they were very, very small and didn’t swell up like usual mosquito bites so they may have come from something else. My mom, sister and niece they also had great results. My mom didn’t get any bites nor did my sister, or my niece! In fact my mom was so impressed with the bath oil she immediately asked me to order her a bottle! So there it is! From my own experience, I can confidently say,
"YES! Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil DID Work For Me!" *
So if you’re looking for an effective, alternative, rather than using an insect repellent, give Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil a try and let us know if it worked for you! Just leave your comment below 🙂
I'd love to hear your experience with either Avon Skin So Soft Bath Oil or Avon Bug Guard. Has it worked for you? How do you use it? Leave your comment below.
*These are my own personal claims based on my own experience and not Avon. Avon does not guarantee nor claim using Avon Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil repels mosquitoes or other insects and suggests using the bath oil only as intended as a bath & body product. Skin So Soft Original Bath Oil is not EPA approved and does not include EPA insect repelling ingredients in it's formula. So in other words . . . Please use at your own risk.
United States Marines have been using skin so soft as a bug repellent at Marine Corps Parris Island (swamp lands) for more than 40 years. When I was there we didn't even use the military issued bug repellent.
I used original skin so soft many many years ago, for the repellent properties. I loved its scent! So much better than insect sprays.
Does the original SSS smell the same still?
Does the new SSS repellent smell like the original oil?
Hi Rachel, as far as I know, the Original Skin So Soft Bath Oil still has the same scent. The Skin So Soft Insect Repellent (Avon Bug Guard) has a different scent.
It’s a light pleasant scent but very different from the original bath oil
Don’t ask an Avon rep if Skin So Soft bath oil is good for bug repellent because they’ll just try to sell you their bug spray (interesting that a makeup company started selling bug spray). You will get a much better value for your money if you buy the bath oil AND it does work. And probably without all the chemicals that are in the actual bug spray. I’ve never used their bug spray so I don’t know what it smells like but I LOVE the smell of the bath oil. I can go sit out in my backyard in the evening after I shower using the bath oil and not get bit once. Don’t mess with a good thing, just use the bath oil and forget about the buy spray.
Hi Helen! I am an Avon Representative and also the one who shared about the Avon Skin So Soft experiment above. I understand why you might think that but really regardless of whether a customer purchases the Original Skin So Soft Bath Oil or Avon Bug Guard it’s really all the same to me. Both are priced about the same it really is a matter of preference so I don’t push one more than the other.
The customers who prefer the Avon Bug Guard, they like that it goes on dry and not oily. They also prefer the lighter scent as it’s not as strong as the oil. It’s also Deet free so that’s a plus there.
Thanks for stopping by Helen, I do appreciate your comment.
I see there is a bath oil and a dry oil body spray, which one would you recommend to repel mozzies?
Hi Swoozie,
Either are the same formula. You could initially purchase the small spray bath oil for convenience an to throw in your bag then later purchase the full sized bath oil to refill the spray.
If you need further help just let me know.
Thanks for visiting!
A few years ago my husband and I went to Gambia and I was told that skin so soft woodland fresh was good so the next year I tried it and it true. The only thing now I can’t seem to find it so I not sure if Avon still supplied it can anyone tell me if they do?
Hi Ann, Avon carries the Original Skin So Soft bath oil which is the most popular product. I’m not familiar with a “Woodland Fresh” scent, I haven’t come across it since I’ve been an Avon Rep. (8 years) but maybe you could give the original a try.
Thanks for asking!
I agree completely! It is THE best at keeping bugs, all kinds, away! Skin so Soft has lived up to the hype for decades!
We have been using the SSS Bath oil in a little spray bottle which Avon provided with purchase of the large bottle years ago. Our entire family including all of our labradors, greyhounds and beagles oh my, love this natural mosquito and flea repellent! We spray when we go out on summer nights or during the day and evenings when we travel to Australia!! The pets are sprayed all the time and their coats are smooth and glossy too!!!
I hear Australia has some gnarly insects, if SSS can handle them, WOW! Thanks so much for sharing PJ 😉 I love hearing all the wonderful testimonies.
I had a military career that spanned across 36 years in several branches of the US Armed Forces. Much of that time was served in “special operations” units that were quite often prone to be in areas where mosquitoes and other biting insects were a problem. Avon “Skin So Soft” was always there with me!
From the days before DEET products were dispensed to military personnel until modern times, Skin So Soft has been a favorite of many of our troops as an insect repellant. It never failed me in any location around the word! The only complaint that I ever heard from the troops concerned the scent. The saying was that if you used “Skin So Soft” on a hot and balmy night, the enemy could smell you twenty feet away!
